A Tale of Two Uprisings: Warsaw & Krakow, Poland

In connection with the spring course "Between Nazism and Communism" (01:563:270/510:263/01:360:292) Professor Nancy Sinkoff (Jewish Studies/History) will lead 15 students on a week-long global field experience, "A Tale of Two Uprisings," to Poland immediately after the semester. Building on the literary and historical themes of the course, high-achieving students will visit two cities, Warsaw and Cracow, with day trips to Nowa Huta (The New Steel Mill), east of Cracow, and to Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the Nazi concentration and death camps.
In Warsaw, students will explore the numerous sites commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (1943), the Warsaw Uprising (1944), and visit Polin: The Museum of the Jews of Poland as well as the Warsaw Uprising museum, History House, the Stalinist Palace of Science and Art, and the site of the new Museum of Modern Art. Students will also enjoy a bicycle trip to Wilanów Palace and a visit to the Poster museum. In Cracow, students will tour the oldest covered European medieval market, explore the architectural heritage of Poland's Jewish community as well as visit Oskar Schindler's factory. Together we will visit Auschwitz-Birkenau. There will be opportunities to engage with Polish and Polish-Jewish history in the form of theatre, performance art, and food. Students will also meet with Polish university students.

Northern Ireland: Partition, Sectarianism and Reconciliation

As part of a Spring 2018 Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar (Northern Ireland: Partition, Sectarianism and Reconciliation) 01:090:297:01, Paul Blaney will be leading 15 students on a week-long trip to Ireland. In conjunction with the New Brunswick-based Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar, students will enroll in a Spring one-credit field experience, 01:090:229. Students will travel to Ireland during Spring Break 2017. The seven-day study abroad experience is designed to bring to life the history, the conflicts, and the post-Good-Friday-Agreement reality of the province. Based in Belfast, students will visit the seat of Northern Ireland's devolved government and explore other key sites in the city. Day-trips from Belfast will take in the rugged north coast and the home of poet Seamus Heaney.

Medieval Cluny, Christendom & Islam

In connection with the spring course "Medieval Cluny, Christendom and Islam" (01:090:297:02) Professor Stephen Reinert (History) will lead 15 students on a 10-day global field experience in Cluny and Paris, France. For the Field Trip syllabus, which is a 1 credit course, review readings will draw back into the semester repository of resources, with additions pertaining to cultural heritage preservation.
Students accepted to the program will receive a special permission number to enroll in the 1 credit field experience.

As part of a Spring 2017 Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar 01:090:294:04, China's Capitals Across Time and Their Linguistic and Cultural Impacts, Professor Richard V. Simmons will be leading students on a twelve-day trip to China. In conjunction with the New Brunswick-based Interdisciplinary Honors Seminar, students will enroll in a Spring one-credit field experience, 01:959:191:01.
- Explore Chinese capitals through time, stopping by imperial historic sites in Beijing, Nanjing, Kaifeng, Luoyang, and Xi'an.
- Learn about the linguistic impacts of these primarily northern capitals and how they impact the common koine language
- Discover how war, dynastic change, and population upheaval affect cultural development and influence cultural and linguistic norms

Spring Break in Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico

Program Cost: $1,610 (airfare included)
The field experience will take students to visit ancient ruins, swimming in underground lakes, hiking a rainforest, sleeping in cities, and meeting with local people in the Yucatán peninsula. Learn applications of history, archaeology, anthropology, and ecological science from local guides. Students will visit Mayan sites such as Chichen Itza and Izamal, key Spanish colonial cities including Mérida, mangroves, and the Kaxil Kiuic Ecological Reserve in the jungle outside Mérida. Be prepared to climb pyramids, eat like a local, and snorkel in tropical seas.

Film Screening: Cracking the Maya Code - NOVA (2008)
Requirements: Participation in the eight day field experience to the Yucatán. Three short response (250 words) one on Mayan site, one on a colonial city, one on ecological preserve. A final group presentation on the ideas encountered in the readings, film and field experience.
